Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) has said scheduling games at night at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) is a temporary arrangement.

Sozobal’s publicist Kondwani Kabowa was reacting to fears by some clubs that the development, which has already seen teams playing between 5.30 and 9.30 pm, would be a thorn in the flesh due to transportation problems.

He, however, said teams that are not based in Blantyre such as Zomba’s Magang’a, Cobbe Barracks, Chancellor College and Changalume Barracks are exempted from this arrangement.

On Wednesday, Bricks broadened their winning streak to 12 straight victories and lead the 12-team table with 24 points after beating College of Medicine’s Lumbricals under floodlights. This happened immediately after High Flyerz beat Crazy Warriors 73-63.

“We are aware that this exercise is inconveniencing teams because it is tough to access public transport after 7pm.

“But they should understand that we have a backlog of games which we must complete within six weeks to identify our representatives at the Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) National Championships early November.

“However, we must make it clear that this will not happen next season,” Kabowa said.

Sozobal’s second-round games kicked off last week with a backlog of at least 13 first-round games.
